Task Guidance

USCIS requires evidence that you have been employed in a critical or essential capacity for organizations that have a distinguished reputation.

Having an important-sounding title alone is NOT enough. You must show that your specific role was essential to the organization's operations or success.

  • A letter from your employer or supervisor describing your critical role, why it was essential, and how it contributed to the organization's success
  • Evidence of the company's distinguished reputation such as excerpts from the company's website, press coverage, awards the company has received (including significant funding awards). (Think Forbes Lists, Fortune 500 rankings, high revenue, distinguished clientele)
  • Organizational chart showing your position (if available)—great evidence: you are 1 of few people at your company doing X
  • Any additional documentation showing the company's dependence on your work (e.g., revenue impact, client acquisition, product launches you led). Emails can be good evidence of this!

  • "Critical" refers to organizational importance—meaning the company depended on you in a way that would be hard to replace.
  • It is about the significance of your function, not just your seniority.

Strong Examples
  • "As the lead architect of the company's core platform, I designed the system that now processes $2B in annual transactions. The CEO's letter confirms the platform would not exist without my work."
Weak Examples
  • "I am a Senior Engineer at a well-known company." (A title alone does not demonstrate critical or essential capacity.)

This evidence demonstrates that you played an essential role in organizations with distinguished reputations.
